In February 1842, 129 members of the Rotterdam Ladies Antislavery Committee – which met under the auspices of St. Mary’s Church – sent a letter to King Willem II asking for the abolishment of slavery in Surinam. This group was comprised of both British and Dutch women, and this letter was the first of its kind in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Indeed, this group of women helped launch the abolitionist movement in the NL to national prominence.
Come hear this story, along with information on the recent letter sent by the Anglican Deanery in the NL to Prime Minsiter Rutte in support of making Ketikoti a National Day of Remembrance, on Thursday, June 22nd at 18:30. Press, government & political representatives, and everyone interested is welcome to attend.
